Calling the Force of Nature
“Calling the Force of Nature” is an interactive, audio-responsive visual installation that delves into humanity’s desire for power and the consequences of our attempts to control the natural world.
As a child, I imagined having a superpower that allowed me to control the wind. Running through the park, I would try to summon the wind, willing it to obey my commands and strengthen my desire—but of course, it never did.
This childhood fantasy of wielding control over nature speaks to a broader human desire to transcend our limits, to become like deities, such as Thor. Deep down, it’s about gaining mastery over forces beyond ourselves, whether they be weather, fate, time, or nature which are fundamentally unpredictable and uncontrollable. And yet, this elusiveness makes humans long for power over them. To control these forces would signify ultimate freedom and capability—the power to shape the world to our will. Ironically, this is likely why humanity can never ascend to a godlike status.
In Calling the Force of Nature, participants directly engage with the desire for control over natural elements. By “calling” upon elements like “stars,” “rain,” “daylight,” “ocean,” “horizon,” “aurora,” “storm,” and even “meteorite,” audiences can summon these forces as visual and auditory representations. This immersive experience blends aesthetic visuals of each element on screen with synchronized sound effects, allowing participants to feel as though they are commanding nature itself. Here, you gain a virtual superpower: the ability to summon nature’s forces with a word. Initially, this may feel empowering, as if you are capable of controlling the elements. But soon, reality reasserts itself, reminding you that such powers remain unattainable in the real world.
Throughout history, humanity has aspired to become godlike, using natural resources without limit and attempting to dominate nature. Yet, the climate crisis and increasing natural disasters remind us of the dangers of overstepping our bounds.
In this way, “Calling the Force of Nature” becomes a modern fable, inviting reflection on humanity’s misplaced confidence and the urgent need for respect toward the environment. The installation offers a powerful commentary on the limits of human power and a call to re-evaluate our relationship with nature, reminding us that true strength lies not in control, but in coexistence.
